What we do here

June 10th, 2008

Hey Guys,

I’m not really sure if you are interested in me blogging about this sort of stuff, but I thought I’d give it a go. If you are bored to tears, you can let me know and I’ll go back to posting recipes, etc.

Greedy or Needy is first and foremost a community. Yes, you can come on here and make a wish and potentially win a modest sum of money, but that isn’t the main reason why people keep coming back. It is the sense of community and real friendship.

When people first started using the web, it was a place where people could go to escape. They could have an online persona completely different from who they were in real life and it was pretty cool. Now, people want to use the web to connect on a deeper level with people in real life.

The web gives people the chance to find others with similar interests to themselves, regardless of location or socio-economic bracket. This is exciting! This connecting of people is what makes sites like GreedyorNeedy possible.

Knowing that, we need to think about how we are going to use the tools we’ve got to make the most out of them. How can we use this site to make amazing things happen? We have the opportunity to change things. No longer are you giving your $5 to UNICEF without having any idea what happens to it. You can make real connections with real people on here and see how that same amount of money impacts their lives. By the way, we refer to this as peer-to-peer giving.

We already have the Spare Change Fund, run entirely by you guys, what are some other suggestions for amazing things we can do on here?

Don’t get me wrong, I like the recipes, but blogging let’s us get to know you a bit. I’ve always enjoyed it when you guys have been able to be interactive with us as much as possible. From what I hear, your time isn’t exactly free, so I’m guessing it’s not an option, but I’d like to see the podcasts come back eventually.
Some of the things I’ve enjoyed from the community have been the themed wish contests run by various members. It’s been a lot of fun making creative wishes, and seeing what everyone else comes up with.

I too like reading your BLOG posts. Like Peter I liked the themed contests as well. I still think we should find a way to limit the number of accounts one person can hold to 2 per household. I also like how people come together to help out others. It would be nice to see a page where those helped outside of the wish pot could be posted so people can see that the community does alot to helpout others here. I would love to see auctions run where the money could go to a site pot for a specific charity that month. Like the bags I crocheted and auctioned off. I would be happy to donate one if the money was going to a site paypal then at the end of specific time a charity was selected to recieve it like CF foundation, Cancer Research, Homeless shelter, or whatever one. Perhaps the charity could be selected by the group. If the site made the donation then we could be more certain it went to designated one.
