my little one Lucas was diagnosed in 2006 with autism, he's always been our special love and we try to do what's best for
him. In 2007 applied for SSI for him to get turned down- was too soon to tell how he was affected by it- we made an appointment for him to go to the UVA-Kluge Children's Rehab to best tested to satisfy not only SSI and their ?'s but our own- how can we help him to realize his potential and be happy with his life. The hospital is about 94-102 miles away one way , depending on the route I have to take. The thing is, my job has become more of a hobby than anything-5 hrs this week; maybe 10 the next- not enough to feed my guys, pay bills, stuff for holidays- much less gas for this trip- had to make appointment in November to get a spot in May 9th! Anyway- I have pawned all that I can just to pay bills with what my paycheck doesn't cover (a lot) and after I catch rent up ($90 left on that only- thank goodness) I am afraid that I won't have any money for gas or a lunch for him at any cheap place near there. We will be gone from 7 am to @ 6pm and that's a long time and drive for a little guy- I will pack a lunch for him, but it would be nice to get him a happy meal and have gas for the car trip. If you all cannot help- prayers would be wonderful- bless you all Update: an angel called today and said we have help for trans on the trip- I changed the wish to $25 for meals for little guy as a treat, because this will be a long trying day for him and he deserves something special- I will still pack some goodies- but would like to make him smile too- I will send back/ pay forward any left over- as I have no idea what places are around for him to eat at or the price- this is breakfast, lunch and dinner for him- and I don't want to be greedy either, have slim fast shakes and bars for me- thank you all so much- Georgie (more)

A 5 for you and my very best wishes. If that is him in the picture... what a cutey!!
As a parent and a grand, with some experience with autistic family members, I want to encourage you. Raising Lucas will be quite a "hands on" experience, a lot of work, but well worth the rewards! You have my hopes and prayers. You will all learn a lot together. I hope this trip will give you plenty of information and ideas of how you can help Lucas to interpret and live in the world around him. I hope he will be able to communicate well with you some day, and you with him. Don't let anyone tell you he will never do this or that.... his life will be a voyage of discovery, and it is too early to really know what will come down the road.
Here's my 5 and my prayers that things turn out alright.

Go to familyrelieffund.org. They help with travel, food and lodging expenses for you to take your sick child to the doctor. I used to collect money for them, and they are a great not for profit organization. God bless. Carol
