My son is home schooled and he thinks Science is wicked cool.
He especially loves experimenting with magnets. I found a kit that he would find totally fun...plus it would be of great educational value.
Here's the description:
Magnets in Motion Kit
"Experiment with Lenz's Law with this fascinating kit! A magnet falling through a metal tube creates circular electric currents (eddy currents). These eddy currents create their own magnetic field that repels the magnet, causing it to fall in slow motion. You can perform 10 magnetism experiments. INcludes two extremely strong neodymium magnets, several strong ceramic magnets, iron fillings, and tubes of copper, aluminum, and plastic."
Sounds neat, huh?
I, personally, will leave the experimenting to the kid. My bedroom television has a permanent blue oval in the upper left-hand corner from one of *my* magnet experiments. My son, fortunately, has better common sense than I. (more)

Hope you both have fun with them.
Ah magnets. So much destructive potential, and yet so much fun!
my kids always loved science too :)
Got 5 from us!! Magnet sets for kids are awesome. When I used to teach at a Montessori preschool we had some really kick-ass magnet activities the kids just loved.
Hope you can get this for him!! :)
