This is a totally selfish wish, my mother has Alzheimer's and I am her sole caretaker. She is at the stage where she is belligerant and hateful. Every day is filled with name calling, slapping and threats to run away. I takes a major battle just to keep her clean. Right now I have 2 kids that are very ill, one with a sever heart problem and one with stomach cancer, at 17 years old. I would love to be able to hire a nurse to take care of her 24/7 if just for a few days so I can deal with other issues and try to get it back together. If I break down I won't be any good to her or my kids. I need to be with Deanna when she has surgery to remove the cancer and to help Marta as well. I love my mom but I need some time off before I go loony toons, I seem to spend a lot of time trying to figure out if I sound like Donald Duck or the Aflac duck. (more)

You poor thing! I know how hard it is caring for an alzheimers patient is. My ex-Mother in Law had that and it was just awful trying to take care of someone who didn't even know you most of the time!

Wow,can I ever identify with your wish. Being a caregiver is really hard and especially when we also have other issues to deal with. Best of luck to you and I really hope you get someone to give you a break.

It's not selfish. I had a family member like that and no matter how much you mean well, it's really more than one person can do by themselves.
You should look into a respite worker. They come and take care of people in need of it so their main caregivers can have a break. I'm not sure who you'd ask about that, though. Maybe her health care workers can point you in the right direction?

Contact your State or Countys Dept of Aging and Adult Services and ask for In Home Support Services. Based on your mothers condition and needs they will be able to award you hours to have a caregiver come in to help her or they will pay you to be her caregiver.
