I met someone through Freecycle sometime back, when giving items away, and we have grown to become good friends.
They are a very young family with three young children, ages 2, 3 and 6. The husband is stationed in VA, and they are moving to GA due to change of station, and Dad has his orders for Deployment to Iraq for July 30, the same time they are due to move into their new house. So needless to say, mom will have her hands full, trying to deal with three young children, a move, unpacking and dealing with her husbands deployment and the children missing their dad. She has also told me that all her family is in Ohio, so she will be dealing with not knowing anyone where they are moving.
Mom and I have been talking about how she wants to find something that the kids can hang onto to remember their father while he is gone. She thought of a Photo Blanket, personalized with family pictures and several of each one of the kids. I thought it would make a beautiful heirloom, unfortunately the cost for this is not cheap, and while I would love to offer it as a gift, my finances are just not there to accomodate this. I am planning on making each child a *shirt pillow*, transferring photos of their father onto a simple white shirt, and sewing all openings up, stuffing them and making them into something they can each hang onto.
But I would love to fulfill this moms wish. I often think of situations I have been in, and realize mine pale in comparison to what other families go through in their lifetime. I am thankful for all I have in my life, but would love to give something to this family before they head south and dad goes away.
If my wish is fulfilled, I will take the money and photos mom has given me and have this beautiful heirloom made for the family. Something they can cherish forever, that can be passed down through the family as time goes along, and something they can even remember me by.

This is such a beautiful wish. You have my 5. I like the idea of the T-shirt pillows. My sister is married to a Marine who will be shipping out any time now and they have 2 boys. I think I might borrow your idea if you don't mind. I am not that great at sewing, but I will give it my best go. I also do not have a way to transfer pics, so I just emailed my sister and asked for 2 of my brother-in-laws t-shirts that I can do this with, she is sending up each nephews favorite shirt of their Dad's. I am not so sure how happy Dad is about the whole thing, but thank you for the inspiration.
