I heard from Georgie (nvr2bgrwnup), and she and her family are facing homelessness as of the 31st. She doesn't have puter access, but was able to get on from a friend's place. She's in VA and this is her AIM ID: gnggoetz. I asked her to PM you, but I don't have any more information than this. Her hubby is working, but she's had to take a leave of absence from her job because of issues with her child, and they have no $$ for deposits to find a new place to live, but do apparently have a section 8 voucher. Can you please try to contact her with some resources? Thanks, Lisa

To everyone else, please pray for this family, they are going to need lots of prayers and a miracle.

    Lisa,

Can you get a contact number for her? Any idea what area of VA she's in?

I'll be back later today, perhaps around lunch time. I have to run for now. It's 6:07 am and I've got to get dressed for work.

I have no way to contact her, I don't even have AIM. If anyone does have AIM, please PM her over there via gnggoetz, and ask her for a phone # where M4x can call her, as well as a specific city/county where she lives. Hopefully, if we all work together, we can save this family from being homeless. m4x, I asked her to check into whether there's an interfaith agency in her area, but I just now got the PM and she didn't stay long online at the friend's because she didn't want to overstay her welcome there.

She does have at least 2 sons, at least one of whom is special needs, and apparently she's had to take a leave of absence from her job (leading to financial difficulties), due to some issues that have arisen.

Ok I'm going to change the title of this since m4x has seen it, please keep it bumped. Will put Georgie's sign in in the title and emergency help needed.

Here's what we need: Anyone who has Georgie's full name, address, phone #, email addy, city, county, # and ages of family members, etc., please contact Mommyfourtimes with that information via PM/Email, whatever method you have of contacting her. If anyone has AIM, please PM Georgie to let her know to contact m4x. If anyone has her phone #, please contact her to get additional details, so m4x can start working on this ASAP. Thanks, and please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers. Lisa

Ok good, thanks for checking, Leo, that's definitely helpful to know. Do you know what county that is?

Oh great, ty Krystal! Hopefully Georgie won't get upset at me, but I would rather chance that than see them end up homeless.

No problem. I just spoke with her on AIM and she said this:

Ok good, thanks for letting me know, Krystal! I hope m4x can find her some resources to help keep them off the streets :).

I'm so glad that, regardless of how members fight sometimes, at times like this, we can all pull together to help one of our own!

Ok I got the info, thanks Krystal. I spoke to Georgie. There isn't really much by way of resources in her area. She has to wait until tomorrow to speak to someone at the one shelter place that MIGHT be an option. I'm digging through housing listings to see what she might be able to do with the section 8.

I'll have to work on this tonight and call her back later.

Michelle, you always do so much for our members that face possible homelessness. I just wanted to say I think that's really incredible of you and I hope those you help are always appreciative.

I know it varies from state to state but in Michigan a Sec. 8 voucher is good on any rental unit as long as the landlord will accept it. Homes do not have to be registered or anything.

    Stasia,

Yes, that is true. So far, the folks she has called told her no. She's got a paper for today and I've found her listings online. I didnt want to waste her minutes, so I told her I would call her back with a list after work tonight.

    Erin,

Thank you. I do it because I've been there. I've been an advocate for homeless families since 1992. I cannot stand the thought of a child, pregnant mom, nursing mom, or entire family sleeping in a car or on the streets. Well, really, it bugs me that anyone has to be homeless in such a prosperous country, but I work mostly with families.

What is so bad right now is people have almost stopped charitable contributions with the economic uncertainty. People hear the news and it scares them.

Churches and charities are hurting for funds. I encourage everyone to give a little something, even if it's only a few dollars, to help keep the charities alive. They help so many people and without them, so many will suffer. Each of us has a cause dear to our heart. This is mine. Yours might be breast cancer or AIDS. From what I understand most organizations are hurting for donations and many don't have any funds at all.

These are tough times for many. Those that can give are scared or have taken huge financial losses from the stock market problems. They are uncertain about their own financial future. It's a recipe for disaster for many agencies. Sure some folks are still giving, but many smaller charities depend on donations from the average working folks. We're hurting the most right now and because of that, resources are thin.

In Georgie's area, there are 2 homeless shelters. One is a transient shelter and the other she's waiting to talk to tomorrow.

I'd like to ask folks do what they do, whether that be prayer, lighting candles, or sending positive energy for Georgie and her family. They've got 2 kids, limited resources, with one special needs child. They are a working family.

I don't really know her but I know what she's going through. Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers.

Finding a place in Virginia it terribly hard, it's typical to have 100 applicants or more just for one place. My heart and prayers go out to her, I've been where she is!

M4x, glad you go to talk to her and see exactly what is going on. I know it's going to be rough, because it's the end of the month, and most orgs run out before the month's half through. Here's a link to St Vincet de Paul, if she needs it. I'm not sure which one is closest to her, but there should be a main #/email to contact for information.

If anyone is interested in learning about St. Vincent de Paul, ck on the right side down the page and it lists resources they help with, and also there are some stories there about what they do - one is sending mobile kitchens to Galveston, TX after Ike.

http://www.svdpusa.org/Contact/tabid/68/language/en-US/Default.aspx My puter's acting buggy, and I can't get a search to come up, but there's a box on there to click for the local Diocese. That should help her, and I also told her if she couldn't find the St. Vincent de Paul near her, to just call the local Catholic Church for the #.

Mommy4T is it 2 kids total or 3? I have enough points on my travel card to do one night and can plus it up enough to cover two. I just need to know which nights would be best, and which holiday inn or candlewood suite would be best for her. Candlewood suits may be better if she has any food items because it has kitchenetts. Where is her stuff going? Does she have pets? I will also need the name of the person that will be checking in

Oh yay, great offer, Kathy, ty! I think Georgie had a place set to move to, but they couldn't come up with the funds. Maybe a few extra days will be all they'll need...at least that's what I'm hoping and praying. Sure hope this all comes together for them in the next few days.
