Apparently some people are working together to grant this wish for me. If you want to help check out Darlinglilred's thread here. [ link ]

I have been having trouble sleeping lately, and part of the reason is that my blankets are not heavy enough.

When I was a kid I had a heavy quilt from my grandmother and I remember how it felt to have that dropped over me and pressing down on me while I slept. Since then, there have been a few times that I have had the chance to sleep places where I have had access to a really heavy blanket or blankets and those nights I have slept very well.

I mentioned this once to my son's occupational therapist and she told me that this is not surprising as many autistic people need the pressure from heavy blankets in order to sleep. In fact, she will often prescribe weighted blankets to autistic people who have sleep issues. These weighted blankets are usually quite expensive (in the range of $220 or more for a queen sized one) [ link ]

I recently finished making and shipping out a queen sized knit blanket to a friend of mine. It's finished weight was just under 12 lbs. This is less than a prescription weighted blanket would be but it was heavy enough that working on it and having it sit in my lap while I finished it was very very relaxing. I think that if I were able to make myself one, it would help me be able to sleep much better. (photo is not the blanket that I made, I did not take a picture of that one)

This $100 would cover more than half of the costs of making a blanket like the one I made for my friend, for myself, as long as I found a great deal on yarn like I did the last time. I am looking forward to finally being able to get a good night's sleep.

Many foster children are supplied with garbage bags, for transporting their personal belongings to and from foster homes. Social workers do this just to make the job quicker and easier... but what kind of a message does this send to a child? Does it not say, "your belongings are not worth much"?

Might a child also suffer feelings of personal worthlessness - "my stuff is worthless, and so am I"?

A group of friends and I would like to address this issue. We are working on our first dufflebag drive, to support our local foster care programs. The first drive will conclude just before the new school year (August 2008). At that time, we will decide whether to continue our efforts as an ongoing project.

The $15 will go toward the purchase of one new/gently used duffle bag. But what I am truly wishing for is moral support, and some great ideas from the GoN community. If you have ever worked on a project like this before (especially from the ground up) I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks for considering my wish!
