Bio:

my life work is running a small home for former street children in Kathmandu, Nepal called Aastha House, or House of hope. To donate (its tax deductible) send checks to The Rising Child Nepal Foundation, 29 Taft Corners, PMB #131, Williston, Vermont 05495. You can also purchase a book about Aastha House, by Naomi Johnson, called The Aastha House Project at www.justcurious.org. all proceeds go to benefit her work as a documentary photographer working with underprivileged kids around the world, and to my home for orphans and street kids in Nepal. and check out our website at http://asthahouse.tripod.com. Its a bit out of date and a new one is coming soon. And video!! (I promise!) Nepal is a place where it's easy to make a difference. Every dollar goes far: * $61 can pay the annual school expenses of a child living in a village. * $100 rescues a little girl from bonded servitude and puts her in school. * $250 covers the cost of restoring the health of a severely malnourished child and educating the mother in proper nutrition. * $720 puts a bright young adult in college for a year. * $950 fully supports a youngster in a good boarding school for a year. To sponsor a child for a full year at Aastha house, including a loving family home, plentiful, nutritious food, all medical and dental care, and the best education available in Nepal, costs $1200 per child. And, finally, we are hoping to raise $200,000 to build our new permanent home. But any amount you can give is so appreciated, be it $5 or $500! It all goes totally to my project. I am an all volunteer project, and I take no salary for this. I work in the "real world" in the international development sector to support the home, and only recently started fund raising in order to finance the building of our permanent house. Finally, go to www.mycause.com/risingchild, and you can purchase name brand stuff from barnes and noble, sears, target, expedia, among others. If you purchase it from this site, my foundation will get a small portion of the proceeds, a HUGE HELP!! so please, if you need to shop, go to WWW.MYCAUSE.COM/RISINGCHILD AND SUPPORT ME BY SHOPPING!! SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP FOR AASTHA HOUSE!! Thanks again, and Namaste, Maggie

Hi Maggie!! First I want to Thank You for accepting me as a friend!! And I greatly appreciated hearing from you! I actually sat down and wrote a lengthy letter (something I don't usually get time to do) :) and then hit something wrong somewhere and it was totally lost!!! I just quickly wanted to say I think you are a wonderful person, with a loving heart, with a terribly important mission! All children, all over the world, are our future!! God Bless!! Please Please keep in touch as often as you can!!

hey, I'll get you the info my hubby gets home... probably won't be home 3 am :( I actually know someone else that will be over there this summer. Her name is Scarlett and I was telling her about you this morning and she was very interested and wants your contact info! I know my father in law spends time in Kathmandu (he used to be in Parliament before it disolved and was actually interested in building an orphanage). Its hard for the family now though since Raj (my husband) is the only support they have. Thats so cool about your husband! Aren't Nepali men the greatest? ;) Raj is hoping to eventually be a nurse, as soon as he can get back into school!

hey, thanks so much for your comment. Aastha House sounds like an amazing project. Whenever we make it out to Nepal I would love to see it! I'm hoping we will have a traditonal ceremony, it sounds so beautiful and it would make his mom so happy.

Hi Maggie,
It sounds like you have an interesting life! Living on Vancouver Island makes it a bit difficult for my daughter to thrive in the industry. However, it's not impossible. It's a matter of doing the right things at the right time.

Wow! That is a very ambitious undertaking in Nepal. Way to go! I have worked in the non-profit sector for the past 8 years. The pay is never great, but the rewards tend to be better spiritually. I've now started my own communications company and want to work primarily with the same sector, to help them compete with the for profit world.

Take care!
Joanne

Thank you for the comment. I love MSF--they do amazing work, and they bring badly needed press to situations where medicine alone won't fix the problems. For my wedding (which is in July), we are giving a donation to MSF instead of doing the traditional wedding favors.

Ha ha ha. Yeah, I get that all the time. I'm 6'7", almost 400 lbs, with a big bushy beard & wild hair. I'm a walking mountain. People come up to me all the time and say I look like Hagrid. I don't mind - I couldn't find a better fictional character to be compared to than to be compared to J. K. Rowling's kind-hearted half-giant!

Believe in yourself and your wish and your wish shall come true! Speak things that be not as though they were.. it's all about faith.. if you have faith as a grain of a mustard seed you can move mountains!!! God Bless! Be encouraged... no matter what may be going on!!!

Thanks, Jeff and Mr. Money and everyone who has had such kind words to say. I do think many of you truly "get" the gift that keeps on giving, which is compassion. Give and you shall receive is so true, and makes life truly worth living. I encourage all of you to go out and find your passion, and make a difference in the world. It doesn't have to be in Nepal and Africa. When I'm in the USA, I volunteer at a hospice and animal shelter. We all have special gifts, and we need to spread them around. There's too much sadness in the world, but in the news, we only hear the tragic. There are so many "average joes" doing great things, and not all of us are Oprah Winfreys with billions of dollars lying around!!
