I volunteer for the Kyle David Miller Foundation - http://www.kyledavidmiller.org - which donates extended harnessing car seats to families in need. We promote keeping children rear-facing and harnessed for as long as possible to keep them as safe as possible in cars.

Hi Bombedier, I just realized that I never responded to your advice on my winning wish for car seats. The booster seat we purchased is for our 9 year old grandson. Although he is old enough to legally ride in an adult lap belt, he is both shorter and lighter weight than the recommended weight and height for the lap and shoulder belts. So we have the two 5-point harness car seats for the 3 and 5 year olds, and the booster for the 9 year old. It is working well and the children are happy to use them! Thanks for your concern.

Hi Bombedier! Just wanted to share that we weighed my son yesterday at the doctor's office and he's only 25 pounds! I'm so happy because he has always been a big guy and I was worried that he wouldn't rear-face much longer. Now I'm thinking we'll make it to 2 1/2. :)

Be sure to put your wish for donations back up!!!! You have so much support here. Maybe we can get quite a few people to help promote it!!!!!

No - legs have nothing to do with rear-facing - read our FAQ section on the website I provided at the end of my comment.

All children who can fit into a rear-facing car seat should since it is the safest way to travel. If your son is still of a weight and height such that he fits rear-facing, then definitely this is what you should be doing. What kind of car seat do you have? Only Britax and Sunshine Kids can tether in the rear-facing position. Once your son is too tall or heavy to rear-face, when you turn him forward-facing, your seat should be tethered.

95% of all car seats are incorrectly installed or used. Please make an appointment with your nearest child passenger safety technician to have your installation checked and receive education on how to install and use your seat. You can find your nearest tech at either http://www.safekids.org/certification or http://www.seatcheck.org.

For info on why rear-facing is safest, please visit our website here - http://www.kyledavidmiller.org/pages/4209/Car_Seat_Safety:_Rear-facing_is_safest.htm

I am just curious, I would like your input on forward versus rear facing carseats. I have a three year old autistic son, and I face him forward. He has a 5 point harness, but no tether. Should I be doing something different? Wont his feet get smushed if he is reverse at this age and height?
