Bio:
Hi Everyone! I'm a 34 year old Native American woman, living on an Indian Reservation in South Dakota. I have lived all over the world and done many things in my short life. I have worked since I was 14, and attended college as well. I enjoy helping people and have worked for many years in social services. I never thought I'd be someone in need of help myself. Two and a half years ago the most wonderful thing happened in my life...I was asked by my cousin (who was pregnant and in really bad situation) to adopt the baby she was about to have. I decided to do it, and became a single parent almost overnight. Since her birth I have had the privledge of watching this tiny infant grow into a smart, adorable, and amazing little girl. Unfortunately, right about the time I became a parent, I began to suffer the effects of a medical condition I was born with. It's called Lymphedema, and basically I was born with an underdeveloped lymphatic system, so my body does not adequately get rid of the lymph fluid from my body. The fluid, in my case, pools in my legs, causing them to swell (in this case water pills or diuretics do not work to eliminate the fluid). Currently I am disabled, and homebound much of the time as this swelling has caused my legs to become huge and deformed, making walking difficult. After a long battle with Indian Health Services, I finally got them to understand my condition and agree to pay for the Manual Lymph Drainage therapy I need to get my legs back in better shape; however, because I live in a remote area, I have to travel 188 miles per day round trip to the nearest therapist. Indian Health Services will not assist me with transportation, because I have my own vehicle. This therapy is going to be happening daily for 2 to 4 weeks and then a couple times a week for 6 more weeks. Being on a limited income from Social Security Disability, this is really hard to afford the gas back and forth. I live with my sister who is a full-time college student and has no income of her own. She does a lot for me and my daughter right now. She also drives me to my medical appointments. I look forward to the day when I am fully mobile again, so I can get back to work and so I can be able to do a lot of things with my daughter. It is a blessing to finally be able to have treatment, but at the same time this is has added a lot of stress. I've almost completed a week of treatment, and am thrilled with the results so far. I just worry about being able to afford the travel to and from treatment.
