Bio:
I am a disabled U.S. Army Veteran (injured in the line of duty).
I have an affinity and empathy toward those who have disabilities, especially those with developmental disabilities.
I am on the board of directors for the Lynchburg Area Center for Independent Living in Lynchburg Virginia. Currently I am learning all that I can about those with Autism and Asperger Syndrome. Combining this knowledge with my degrees in Sociology and Theatre, I am developing a program of intercession to provide more services and a program of interaction within these services.
Using a wheelchair definitely gives me a different perspective on the world and a new understanding of how those with disabilities have to endure a different lifestyle.

I'm trying to get new programs started at our Independent Living Center. We just started really charging forward. Once we get straightened out with our core services, I want to see several activities started. Swimming, Wheelchair Curling (we have a new ice rink in town), etc.. We do have Wintergreen Adaptive Skiing during the winter. I'd also like to see wheelchair basketball started and find some quadriplegics for w/c rugby. Drive on!

Definitely empowering watching Spinal Cord SURVIVORS participating in sports. I was blown away watching the people surf with the help of wonderful volunteers.
This organization looks like a wonderful nonprofit. I originally sent the link to my friend so that she could show her son it.

Awesome program! I looked up the website and it looks like a lot of fun. I love the water and swimming, but with my back the way it is all I can do is swim in the pool and watch others with the more physically demanding fun. Oh, well. I love watching others with disabilities participate in any sport. It is so empowering! Thank you for pointing me to this program. Great idea!

Have you heard of this organization Life Rolls On? I saw tv show about this young man. They have a surfing program which is incredible and inspiring.

You're welcome. Helping others is what I like to do. The biggest thing about presenting to your 4 year old is to treat Matt as a normal person, who just happens to use a wheelchair to "walk". The worst thing anybody has ever said is, "I'm so sorry for you." or "You poor thing." Thanks for your thank you! I've never been on the West coast, but the area Matt lives in looks like a great place (on the map, anyway). Best wishes to him on the racing chair and on his participation on the track team. The ADA will back him all the way if he runs into any resistance. Talk to you later. Steve
Steve, Thank you for taking the time to send me some resource info that I can pass onto my best friend so that she can help her son. I just read your bio. I also wanted to thank you for protecting our country and the liberties that we are afforded in the United States. I have been trying to explain to my 4 year old that our friend Matt will be in a wheelchair the next time we visit them in Washington. I know that Matt will succeed in life because of his positive attitude and already wants to participate in his hs track team with a specialized racing wheelchair.
