It is with much excitement that I am able to announce that we have opened up a chapter of the National Sarcoidosis Society in Southern California, servicing California and the entire West Coast.We will have our first annual walk on Saturday, April 21st from 8am-5pm in Yucca Valley, CA.

My name is Andrea McKittrick. I am 33 and live in Southern California. I am the president of the National Sarcoidosis Society here in California and I also have this disease myself. I have sarcoidosis in my lungs, lymph nodes, stomach, skin, joints and my heart is enlarged due to poor lung capacity. I am a wife and mother and with this disease progression, I am afraid that I will not see my son grow up.

Sarcoidosis is a rare and potentially fatal inflammatory disease. It can attack any organ of the body but attacks the lungs in almost 90% of cases. It is estimated that about 5 in every 100,000 whites will contract this disease and 40 in every 100,000 african americans will be diagnosed with sarcoidosis. It is more prevelant in women ages 20-40. It also affects children. No one knows what causes Sarcoidosis and there is no cure. Most persons are usually treated with steroids of some sort. About 80% of people will usually go into remission after 6-18 months. Some require no treatment. Others, like me, don't respond to treatment and are diagnosed as chronic, which means I will never go into remission. Many celebrites also have sarcoids. Bernie Mac, Karen Duffy, Tisha Campbell-Martin and Reggie White, who died from sarcoidosis, are just among the few. This disease does not discriminate and affects men, women and children alike. Many individuals die because this disease is not easy to diagnose.

This walk a thon means a lot to me because we so desperately need to raise awareness about this disease and we also need to educate those affected or individuals who know someone with sarcoidosis. We are a non profit organization with a 501 (c)(3) status through the IRS. We are also the only organization that is not only nationwide, but we are world wide with members as far away as Australia. We believe that funding research is important, but it is more important to be able to provide financial support to anyone who has lost a job, has trouble paying for medications or doctors bills or just has some other financial difficulities. No other organization does what we do. That is why your support is so needed. I would love to have you aboard and as a supporter. I have a disease called Sarcoidosis and it is slowly robbing my life from me. I have a wonderful husband and a beautiful 7 year old (that is him in the profile pic). I recently opened up a chapter of a Sarcoidosis non profit in my area and have had several newspaper article written about me and the organization. I would like to be able to purchase more brochures and buy some pens to be able to send to those who are interested. I have been paying for a lot of these things out of my own pocket, but it does get expensive. There are so many others out there that have this disease, it is a rare inflammatory disease, that do not have access to the internet and rely on getting information from their doctors office or through the library. My parents mean the world to me and it hurts me to watch my dad suffer from the arthritis that he suffers. It affects mostly his shoulders, hands and knees. Because his arms and hands give out on him, he was always afraid to hold my son when he was a baby. I would like to surprise him and give him a hot tub so that he can soak away some of those aches and pains (and mom could jump in to keep him company!!). He has sat in my aunt and uncles hot tub and commented on how it eased the aches. Since I've been sick, I have developed a whole new appreciation for what my dad goes through without complaint. As many of you know, from other wishes, I suffer from a rare disease called sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory autoimmune disease. There is no cause and no cure. We don't know how we get it, but something enters our bodies and starts attacking it. If you are lucky, you go into remission. If you are like me, you become chronic and the disease progresses. We are currently presenting bills to Congress, our various legislative leaders, and to the DOD. We apply for any grant that we can and we are constantly trying to educate ourselves, others with this disease and our physicians.

I opened a chapter of the National Sarcoidosis Society here in Southern California and have made a lot of progress in educating and raising money. I am holding a walk a thon on April 21st and can't believe the response I have received. But I need money year round to help pay for postage, brochures and other administrative things. Unlike other Sarcoidosis groups, we help others financially with bills that they have and aren't able to pay. The requests are endless and our funds are limited. I would use this money to help those who have requested financial assistance and also to pay for the materials that I need to educate. My friend Mark is such a terrific man. His wife has sarcoidosis but is also an alcoholic and drug user. He has been dealing with this for 16 years and is done!! He is trying to rediscover who he is and one thing he has lost in years of taking care of his wife and 3 kids is his love of photography. Every time he gets the money set aside for buying a camera, he ends up having to use it to cover a bill because his wife has drained their bank account again. His wife is in rehab and he is so stressed and worn out. This roller coaster has really started taking its toll on him and I know that if he was able to start doing something that he enjoyed he would be able to cope a lot better. I put this wish in the naughty category but I think it's a nice wish. Swiss has been trying for 4 rounds now to have her wish granted. She really needs funds for prescriptions and other needs. I suffer from an autoimmune disorder myself so I understand the amount of frustration that you have when you need medications but can't afford them. Some others bashed her last wish because she said she needed bandaids and sunblock. When you have a disease that feeds off the sun, you have to keep yourself protected at all times. I can go into the sun for just a few minutes and get broken out. Please help to grant my wish. And after you vote for me, please go and vote on Swiss's wish. We need to help her to get the basic things that she needs for her own survival. Please help to alleviate some of the stress from her life. This is a purely greedy wish. I would love to have my hair cut and colored. I haven't had any spoil me time in a while and would love to go and get pampered. I have had to keep my hair short due to being on steroids and it falling out but I have been off the steroids for 3 months and my hair is finally growing!!
