Funds for Cowboy's surgery

I volunteer with a dog rescue group called Retriever Rescue of Colorado. The group recently took in a dog named Cowboy - a sweet Lab/Dane mix. Cowboy was surrendered after he chewed on his owner's motorcycle. Cowboy was punished by being run over repeatedly with the motorcycle. One of his back legs is crushed and requires about $3,000 worth of surgery. RROC doesn't have that kind of money, so Cowboy has been hobbling around in pain, waiting for the corrective surgery he needs. [ link ]

RROC has been fundraising for Cowboy's surgery, with little success. The economy is just too tight for people to give away their money, as much as they may want to. I know that there are a lot of needy people out there right now, I'm sure there are much more compelling wishes to compete with. I was just hoping - won't you take a stand with me against abuse? Cowboy was a perfectly healthy dog, and someone abused him to the point that he's not anymore. What happened to this dog was evil and wrong. If you agree, please give this wish your five stars. If it wins, I'll ensure that Greedy or Needy is listed on the RROC page as one of Cowboy's donors.

Thank you!

To be able to complete our backyard landscaping and fences

To be able to complete our backyard landscaping and fences

After years of saving, my husband and I were finally able to buy a new home last year. We set aside $4,000 in our savings account to complete the back yard, including the two side fences that would allow us some privacy and security for us and our son.

Unfortunately we recieved a huge tax bill this year and will end up paying the federal and state governments everything that we saved, and then some. We had no idea that we would owe so much, it really was a shock.

The $2,000 is what it would cost to do the side fences and yard work ourselves, without hiring a contractor. We would need to buy the materials and either purchase or rent equipment, like a tiller, shovels, a wheelbarrow, etc. It would be very basic landscaping, just rocks and grass.

We live in an HOA which requires that we complete our yard by November 2007. If we don't, we will be subject to fines and possibly court action. We really appreciate your vote, and especially some moral support. I've never even had a garden before, so I'm feeling really overwhelmed by having to do everything from scratch. Any encouraging words or advice is sincerely appreicated!

P.S. I uploaded a picture of our yard. Nice utility boxes, eh? The fence you see in the back belongs to the HOA, since our lot backs up to the road. I think the white jacket was left there by one of our neighbor's kids - another reason why we need those side fences.

I took hot glass classes in college, but it was such an expensive hobby that I gave it up after graduating. Now I really regret giving up the only art I ever had a passion for.

I'd love to get back into working with hot glass - both glass blowing and casting. There's a studio here in Denver that offers classes for $100 [ link ] . I'm wishing for that amount plus $50 for a babysitter to watch my son while I'm in class.

And yeah, that's me in the picture - I'm standing up.

Hey there Belindas! I'm a huge Homestar Runner fan, I watch the cartoons like it's some kind of freaky religion. Yet I don't buy nearly enough fan stuff, like shirts and DVDs, to cover all the bandwidth I surely use on the Homestar Runner website. I feel a little guilty about it, because I do love the site and I ought to do more to make sure it stays online.

I'd love to have a Senor Cardgage shirt. Senor Cardgage cracks me up and the slogan "No Probalo!" should be my own, both because I'm an easy-going girl (whose name is not Valerie) and because I make up words like "probalo".

So come along down and vote for me today! My left name is tremendous savings, Miss America.

My husband and I have lived in the great city of Denver for a year and a half, and we haven't done ANYTHING fun since we moved here. No cool pubs, no block parties, no operas, nothing but sitting around on our butts at home. This is such a waste because Denver has tons of stuff to do every blessed weekend.

I'm dying to see "Wicked", but the show has sold out. We can get our names placed on the lottery for returned or unclaimed tickets. If we win the lottery we get orchestra seats for only $25 each!

If I win this wish I will hire a babysitter for the knee-biter, make a reservation at a nice restaurant, and hopefully get some tickets for one of the last three shows of Wicked! Even if we don't get to see Wicked, we will still go out and probably take in another show.

To share a memory with you - NOEL

When I was a kid, my Gramps used to put up the most tattered, ugly Christmas decorations for the holidays. They were 20 years old and from a time when he and my grandmother had small children. Gramps could afford new decorations, but these had sentimental value and so were taped, stapled, and prayed over to keep them going another year.

One of the indispensable items was a collection of large wooden letters that spelled out the word "NOEL". NOEL had seen better days - the red paint was faded and the wood chipped. Still, Gramps would stick NOEL on the garage door with rusty green thumbtacks for our neighborhood to enjoy.

Not all of our neighbors loved NOEL as much as we did. Our neigbor across the street, Neil Schwartz, would accuse Gramps of spelling his name wrong. NOEL, he said, was just a careless mispelling of Neil. One day Gramps came home from work and NOEL had been replaced with large construction paper letters that spelled NEIL.

Well, Gramps was having none of that. I don't know when he managed to do it, but the following day HIS name was posted over the Schwartz's front door for all to see. My dear Gramps had definitely one-upped Neil, because his name was DICK.

Some people would chuckle and let it go. Not Neil, and certainly not Dick. The NEIL-DICK war waged on for months. Neither of these silly old men would take the other's name off their home until the construction paper disintegrated and the tape dissolved in the rain.

Gramps passed away when I was 16. It's been many years and I still miss him so much. So many of his friends and family have moved on, or passed on, or forgotten the good times. I don't know why people want to focus on the misery of dying, rather than the robust life of a great man. My wish is that anyone who reads this goes away with a smile, and that a small part of Gramps will live on in your memory.

Thanks for reading!

I grew up in Kailua on the island of Oahu, just steps away from the beach. I know you're thinking "How lucky!", and you're probably right. Except, it's really hard for a young family to afford anything when a gallon of milk is $6 and a tiny house is $2.5 million. My husband and I tried to make a go of it there, but realized even owning a modest condo would be out of our reach. We had big dreams and a middle class budget, so we moved to the mainland to start over.

We moved from Hawaii to Denver at the end of 2005. I like it here, but the extreme change in weather and culture has left me a little down. It hasn't helped that this past winter was one of the worst most Denverites can remember - we had several heavy snows, and bad winter weather from November until April. I miss my home and my family. I miss the slower pace of island life.

I've been trying to put on a brave face for my husband's sake, but I'm getting really homesick. I'm already dreading next winter, and it's only May. I really want to go home for Christmas, so this wish is for airfare for my husband, son and me. We'll take off that week before Christmas and hopefully spend the holidays at home.

J&L's Mom has posted this wish several weeks in a row. row. She has twins who need good convertible carseats. She has tried to get carseats donated, but is not eligible. I know of a good carseat, called Cosco Scenera, that will serve as very good seats for her kids until they reach 40 pounds. The Scenera is one recommended by carseat technicians and is $40 at WalMart.

Child passenger safety is a worthy cause. Let's make this happen.

With a toddler in the house, we eat mac & cheese a lot! I've tried a number of recipes on allrecipes.com, but either they hey aren't that good or the cheese sauce comes out kind of stringy yet runny. I'd like to have a recipe with a thick, creamy sauce that is tasty, too.

Anyone have any suggestions? I won't use American cheese/Velveeta, as I don't trust dairy products with a longer shelf life than I have. I also can't stomach the boxed stuff.

This wish is for another RHF member, J&L's Mom. Mom. I've watched her repost this wish for many weeks, and it's breaking me up that she's not getting anywhere.

J&L's Mom has young twins who are outgrowing their infant carseats. She needs two new 5-point harness convertible carseats in order to keep her babies safe in the car and to comply with the law. She has looked into her local resources for free carseats but has gotten nowhere.

Several certified carseat technicians have recommended the Cosco Scenera (pictured) as a good and affordable convertible seat. The Scenera will hold a child rear-facing until he is 35 pounds, and forward-facing until 40 pounds. The high weight limit for rear-facing makes this seat even more appealing as rear-facing is much safer, especially for babies. The Scenera is currently $40 at WalMart.

We received a $10 donation last round, so I'm asking for the remaining $70. Please help me make this wish a reality! Thank you.

We bought a home recently, something much larger than the apartment we had been living in, and it feels so empty. Our house doesn't really look like a home, just a bunch of white walls and open space.

I'd really like to start filling the place with some identifying items. Since art is the only possession that brings me true happiness, I'd like to have the vase in the picture. It's an original work by Michael Mortara, a glass artist from Volcano, Hawaii (here's the link to his website: [ link ] ). $200 isn't going to buy the vase, but I can find a way to come up with the rest of the money.

Therapy for my cats

My family includes two cats. I've come to the conclusion that they are in need of some serious mental help.

My girl cat, Cleo, has a fixation on anything that peels. Bananas, the pull-tab on a gallon of milk, and those perforated strips from FedEx envelopes are some of her favorites. Have you ever seen a cat beg for a banana peel? It's weird. We never give her banana peels, for obvious reasons, although she does get the milk pull-tabs. She has a vast collection of tabs which she keeps beneath the sofa.

Oreo is my boy cat. He hides under my bed 90% of the time. About twice a month he runs up to me and pukes at my feet. Then he walks away. It's like he's saying "Here's what I think of you, and your cooking."

I really think that Oreo and Cleo could use some pet therapy. $85 would get us a consultation with a cat behaviorist who would help me decipher and my cat's behavior.

It dawned on me the other day that we've lived in our house for eight months and still don't have curtains for our front room windows. We don't use that room as much as the kitchen or living room, but it's still uncomfortably easy to see into our house from the street. It's just one of those things that comes with having a new-fangled "open floor plan" home.

I'm sure that the neighbors don't appreciate seeing me wander around the house while I brush my teeth, so I'm going to wish for some curtains. Please vote for me, I know the neighbors will appreciate it!

Is there anything sexier than a cute woman in a nice-fitting pair of jeans? I don't think so!

Alas, none of my favorite pants quite fit since I had my son. I've looked around the department stores, but I everything I try on is high-water or gives me a serious case of "muffin-top". It's just scary.

I've decided that I want a pair of custom-made jeans from Land's End: [ link ] They will cut a pair of jeans based on your measurements, plus some information on your proportions, body shape, and how you prefer your clothes to fit.

Since this is a specialized order, the custom jeans are quite costly - at least $70 to start. I feel that it's worth it to have a few pieces of well-made, nicely fitting clothes, but it just isn't in my budget. So I'm wishing for a new pair of super-hot jeans! I promise to post a picture when I get them!

I've come to realize that my subdivision is full of pretentious jerks. I'd love to be able to put a giant billboard in my yard that says "If you value perfectly cut grass more than a good relationship with your neighbors, then guess what? You suck! Stick to gussying up your own yard with plantings and other crap that you are never around to appreciate, oh wait, you do that to impress your NEIGHBORS."

Unfortunately, billboards aren't allowed in my community so I'm thinking I need a more subtle way of expressing myself. I'm thinking a couple of bright pink lawn flamingos would do the trick. I found some at Sears for $20, and the best part is that they GLOW in the DARK. Oh yes, my neighbors are going to have a fit when I put these up. The thought just warms my heart.

I have one sibling, a brother who is 20 years old. Last week Kyle had an accident - he fell while hiking and sustained a serious head injury. The doctors didn't think that he would make it, but as of today he's still alive and is somewhat responsive but not truly conscious. Kyle can open his eyes, and he'll thrash around when someone near him speaks. He seems to be improving, and they moved him out of the ICU yesterday. My family and I are so incredibly grateful that Kyle is still with us!

His doctors believe that Kyle will need lots of rehabilitation therapy before he can function again. It will probably take a year. I'd like to go and spend some time with him and my mom, to help them through this. They are on the Oregon coast, and I'm in Denver. I'm asking for $450 for the plane tickets (I'll have to bring my son with me).

I really appreciate any support, as having my mom go through this alone is tearing at my heart and I'm really down about it.

School Uniforms for Kari422's Daughters

This is Kari422's wish for school uniforms for her daughters. The girls started school on September 4th at LEAP Academy. LEAP is a very special charter school run by Rutgers, a prestigious American university. The following is from the school's own website:

"The LEAP Academy University Charter School is located in the City of Camden, one of the poorest cities in the nation whose public schools are among the lowest achieving in the state. The School is a result of a long-term effort that grew from a commitment of the founders to provide young people in the city of Camden with skills, attitudes, and knowledge that would allow them to have productive, effective, and fulfilling adulthoods...It became the dream of the founders to provide a holistic approach to education that would provide opportunities for students and parents and the ultimate rebirth of the City of Camden."

Kari's not one to complain or brag, although she has reason to do both! Her youngest daughter is only in 7th grade and she's already being courted by Ivy League universities - she's that smart. Both of her girls are great students. Kari has gone out on a limb and purchased the uniforms using money she needs to pay her bills. She believes that a quality education is far more important than keeping her utilities paid.

A vote for this wish is a vote for opportunity over continued inequality, education over ignorance, excellence over mediocrity. Who knew $100 could buy so much?

Katiebug5n8 is a wonderful member of RHF who is really in need right now. She has just completed months of chemotherapy and was unable to work. She has gone through all of her savings during her illness. Katie is a single mom of two sweet kids who have cared for her during this rough time in their lives.

Katie just had her water turned off due to non-payment. She did receive some donations toward her water bill, but they didn't make it in time and the utility now wants a reconnect fee in addition to the amount owed. Katie and her family are currently using a neighbor's water, she has a hose hooked up to an outside spigot and heats up the water on the stove. This is a crappy situation to have to live with, but it will be worse once the first freeze hits Colorado as the neighbor will need to shut off the outside water and disconnect the hose to prevent freeze breaks. Then Katie and her family will have no source of water.

Please vote for Katie and her family, water is really one of the few things that humans can't do without. Thank you!

I recently discovered a very saddening thing about a friend of mine here at RHF. Our lovely AllyT has NEVER made nor eaten a smore! She can't even buy graham crackers in her town. Her local grocery store doesn't carry them.

Let's share a North American tradition with our friend down under - let's send some chocolatey, gooey, decadent smores to Ally! With the $50 I'll purchase and make up a little gift basket of chocolate bars, graham crackers, and marshmallows. Since this gift would contain perishables it will have to be shipped FedEx to Australia, hence the great expense involved.

"I love to sew! It is my favorite hobby. If you want examples just check out my media gallery. I have lots of fabric and projects that are sadly waiting in storage bins. I had my last machine for about 8 years. As hard as I used it, that was a pretty good run. Well I don't have the money to replace it right now.

Now you may be wondering what makes this wish naughty. Well I have lost weight and I need to make a new costume that fits me. I would like to make me a new corset and a really sexy pirate costume. I hope this appeases the Queen of Naughty! So help me continue to make uniforms for the Klingon Empire, and Pirate shirts for my high seas adventures, and a new corset for the wench in me!"

Two amazing members of our community forum have been running an "Angel Tree" for some kids who might otherwise not have much have much of a Christmas. Many members have stepped up and taken on providing Christmas for these children. So far they've adopted out over 60 kids! There are still many left, though, and I'd like to help more by adopted two more angels. Unfortunately my pocketbook just won't stretch that far.

If you'd like to read more about the efforts of the RHF elves and the children who are waiting to be adopted, please see this link: [ link ] Please consider adopting an angel, if you can. It'll make you feel SOOOO GOOD!!

Thank you and Happy Decemberween, everybody!

There's been an ongoing effort in the forum to ensure that members' kids have a nice Christmas. It's called the RHF Angel Tree, and so far they've adopted out over 60 kids! There are nine children left on the current list, plus there are more waiting for a third round. I'd like to adopt at least two more of the kiddos and make sure that they have some presents to open on Christmas morning. Unfortunately my personal pocketbook won't stretch that far, so I'm making this wish.

If you can help by adopting one or more of the kids from the angel tree, please email the RHF elves at rhf_angel_tree@yahoo.com. Don't be shy! They can answer your questions and get you set up with a family who will be extremely grateful for your kindness. At this time the Angel Tree is not accepting new kids, since they've had some who've been waiting for a while.

Last round someone asked why this wish was in the naughty category. I believe this is a naughty wish because most Christmas presents are luxury items (toys, games and other fun stuff). That's why I feel that it can't go in the nice category.
